Start with the person
A welcoming conversation begins with musical taste, mood, memories, and what the veteran wants to express.
Mission Through Music™ creates a guided space where veterans can turn lived experience, emotion, memory, and hope into original music.
THE MISSION
We use the creative process of songwriting and music-making to help veterans express what may be difficult to say in ordinary conversation.
The goal is not to replace clinical care. It is to add a meaningful, accessible creative layer that can support reflection, connection, confidence, and community.
THE EXPERIENCE
A welcoming conversation begins with musical taste, mood, memories, and what the veteran wants to express.
The participant's own language, ideas, and emotional direction become the foundation for lyrics and storytelling.
Genre, voice, arrangement, and production choices turn the story into an original musical experience.
The veteran leaves with something tangible: a song that reflects their voice, their moment, and their creative ownership.
MEET THE FOUNDER
Founder | Mission Through Music™
Songsmith SoulWorks
Mission Through Music™ was founded by Army veteran Bryon McGainey from a simple belief: sometimes people carry experiences that are difficult to explain in ordinary conversation, but music can give those experiences somewhere to go.
Drawing from decades of leadership, service, training, and a deep connection to music and storytelling, Bryon developed Mission Through Music as a guided creative-expression experience centered on the individual.
Participants do not need to be musicians, singers, or songwriters.
They simply bring their story, memory, emotion, idea, or moment.
Mission Through Music helps them turn it into something they can hear.
“Sometimes the first step isn't finding the perfect words. It's finding a safe way to begin.”
WHAT A SESSION LOOKS LIKE
Every Mission Through Music experience begins with listening. The participant chooses how much they want to share and where they want the creative process to go. Musical preferences, memories, emotions, phrases, and ideas help shape the direction.
Those elements are developed into an original musical experience reflecting the participant's voice and creative choices. The finished song becomes something tangible they can hear, revisit, share if they choose, or simply keep for themselves.
No musical experience is required.
EXPERIENCE THE MUSIC

VETERAN VOICE
A reflection on the bonds formed through service and the experiences veterans may continue to carry long after the uniform comes off.
The Bond We Carry explores connection, shared experience, and the relationships that can remain meaningful across different chapters of a veteran’s life. It demonstrates how lived experience, memory, and emotion can become the foundation for musical storytelling.

REFLECTION & CONNECTION
Some experiences are remembered not as complete scenes, but through emotions, sensations, fragments, and feelings that remain.
Echoes, Not Scenes demonstrates how music can provide a creative language for experiences that may be difficult to describe in ordinary conversation—allowing emotion itself to help shape the story.

COMMUNITY IMPACT
Understanding does not always require having lived the same experience. Sometimes it begins with listening.
You Had To Be There explores the space between lived experience and the people who want to understand, support, and remain present. It demonstrates how music and storytelling can create opportunities for conversation, empathy, and connection.

OUR APPROACH
The participant's experience leads the creative process.
The participant's words, preferences, ideas, and emotional direction influence the finished work.
Participation is about expression, not performance ability.
Mission Through Music is a creative-expression experience and is not a replacement for professional medical or mental-health treatment.
WHY MUSIC?
Music can hold memory, emotion, identity, culture, humor, grief, hope, and connection at the same time.
Mission Through Music uses that familiar human language as an entry point for creative expression.
Sometimes the finished song matters.
Sometimes the conversation that created it matters even more.
“WHEN WORDS ARE HARD TO FIND, MUSIC CAN HELP CARRY THEM.”
